Coorparoo is thought to be named from the Aboriginal name for Norman Creek. Settlement of the area dates from the 1850s, with land used mainly for farming. Gradual growth took place in the 1880s, and again in the 1910s. Significant development did not occur until the interwar period. Expansion continued during the post-war years, with many units and apartments built from the 1970s. The population has increased slightly since the early 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
Coorparoo is bounded by Landsdowne Street, Halifax Street and Temple Street in the north, Bennetts Road, Old Cleveland Road, Harwill Street, Leicester Street, Kelsey Street, Waverley Road and Boundary Road in the east, Cavendish Road, Lade Street, The Laneway, Wills Street, Marriott Street, Wylma Street, Sackville Street, Lade Street, Chatsworth Road, Upper Cornwall Street and Cornwall Street in the south, and Rialto Street, Old Cleveland Road, Main Avenue and Norman Creek in the west.
Coorparoo is an established residential area, with commercial areas along Old Cleveland Road and Chatsworth Road.
Major features of the area include Coorparoo Plaza Shopping Centre, Cavendish Central Shopping Centre, Wembley Park, Eric Sivell Park, Giffin Park, The Common, Loreto College, Villanova College and a number of other schools. There is no better place to live!
